Nice Salmon

Michael Ward caught this beauty on Sunday night on South Pier. The salmon
was a challenge landing because gaffing is difficult on the sea side in
windy conditions, but Graham Karg was up for the challenge and successfully
getting it to the pier. Even though it was a windy night the shoal salmon
were on the bite. Kobus Duvenhage was very unlucky losing out on three runs.

Louis caught this Monster of a Kingfish Last Sunday on a live Mullet. What
makes it more attractive is the fact that he caught this 35kg beauty off

I took my wife and baby girl for a swim at Pelican island last Thursday and
decided to take my other baby (my dropshot combo) with. Turned out to be a
very good decision as I managed to land my first Springer on Dropshot. Even
better, I landed 3 of these beauties in only 5 casts!!!! The bait used was
GULP! 5" Jerkshad Pearl White.

Nirvasan got this 8 kg Garrick on the short pier last week using live shad
as bait. This was only but one of many Garrick landed in the Richards bay

Vincent Pillay caught this monster 9.2kg Garrick on his light
dropshot/pluging tackle at Pelican Island in Richards bay. The tackle used
was a small white plug casted with the Daiwa Exceller rod, Shimano Symetre
4000 reel and only 10lb arachnid braid. Congrats on landing this beauty of a
fish!

It was the first sunny and clear day we had in a while, And everybody took
the advantage of it! People young and old was on their way to the fishing
waters. Shads were biting early ,so the few people who were up early got
there live bait for the day and that's how Bryan caught his beauty at south
pier (Richards bay , bay side) on Sunday afternoon!
Weighing at 8Kg,it should have been an awesome fight!

Gant notes the weight reduction is possible from the smaller frame, a one-piece cold forged and machined aluminum right sideplate, and an ultra-lightweight cold forged aluminum Magnumlite spool - both the right sideplate and spool feature the E.I. surface treatment. "Anglers will also find a corrosion prevention pad in the manual metal clutch lever, eight shielded A-RB anti-rust bearings in each reel, chrome plated screws and a cold forged aluminum drag star," Gant said, "all designed so anglers can pretty much abuse these reels in saltwater and have very little worry about any corrosion."

Each retrieving in 38-inches of line per crank and with 6.3: gear ratios, the TN10A holds 245 yards of 30-pound PowerPro braid, the TN12A handles 280 yards of 40-pound PowerPro, and the TN14A holds 375 yards of 40-pound.

With quick 6.2:1 gear ratios and able to retrieve 46-inches of line per crank, the TN16NA with its narrow spool will hold 370 yards of 50-pound PowerPro, while the TN16A handles 530 yards of 50-pound. The TN20A and TN30A have the capacity to hold 710 yards and 1015 yards of 50-pound test PowerPro, respectively.

Anglers will quickly notice the new chrome color of the Trinidad A reels, plus a lightweight ergonomic white handle knob and adjustable handle shank. All the reels features Shimano's Dartainium II drag for high pressures and durability.

In sizes and new and proven features to use all types of lures and baits for just about anything that swims in the salt, "we designed the TN10A primarily for use with our new Shallow Water Butterfly jig system to match up with Trevala S jigging rods," Gant explains.

Wanted to get an early mornings dropshot session today but overslept lol. Got at the pier 07h00, 2 hours late! Only to find some die hard dropshot fisherman telling me there is no fish at all today (23/02/11). I told them it is only because they are not using GULP dropshots, as a joke of cause. But on my 4^th cast this joke became reality. A good size Kingie hit my GULP so hard that it actually bent the jighead! The fight was on! Me and the King, like always. I asked for some assistance in landing this King, as I forgot my landing net at home, but nobody wanted to help. Nuts, they were actually jealous! Had to land him all by myself with no landing net! The tail cut my fingers and blood was running like somebody gutted a bull, but I never let go. Only now, after I landed this bloke all on my own, did the guys come by to lend a hand lol. One assisted me in taking a picture before I let him go, back to the deep to fight another day.

what lies beneath

I decided to target some blacktip kingies of the Petingo wreck about 14km
south of Richards Bay harbor, lying in 25m depth. Rigged with only 4kg
Berkley Fireline on my Daiwa Procaster reel and Shimano Nexave rod. First 3
casts saw some giant garfishes smash my 5inch Gulp mackerel and I eventually
got one hooked, but only to lose him next to the boat. Next cast I let my
1oz Arrow jighead drop to about a 50 count. Started twitching and on! This
was no blacktip!!! I had to guide the fish with my light tackle away from
the wreck to prevent being cut off. After the hook-up I gave him only a bit
of pressure to secure a good solid hook set. With this he spooled about 130+
meters of line in no time. He was going towards the wreck. I released the
pressure a lot, but not too much for the fish to shake the hook. With less
pressure the fish changed its direction away from the wreck. From a safe
distance I once again applied more pressure and the fight was on. Every time
I thought he got tired he would just quickly spool about another 50 odd
meters of line and make me sweat to get it back. This continued until the
fish gave up, probably an hour plus, later. What a sight it was to see this
monster GT swim next to the boat, solidly hooked in the corner of its mouth
with the Gulp Mackerel still hanging there, ready to be sued again and
agian.

Maco attack released Marlin

A man jumped into the water armed with his camera to hopefully get some
nice pics of what was to be yet another tag and release of a striped marlin.
Then from out of nowhere a 3meter shortfin maco attacked the fish while the
diver was still in the water. A narrow escape indeed.

junior angler Leighten Geldenhuys with his rock & surf league. "In our eyes
he is the next Wesley Rapson (the best angler when it comes to all forms of

Marlin like shad!!!

Over the past 3 months the marlin in Richards Bay started coming out like shads in Margate!!! Good news is, it is getting better and better every day!! This mad Marlin run places Richards Bay on the map as one of the best spots for billfish worldwide!! For those who do not know this each flag represents a marlin specie tagged and released on that trip.

Ultra light bait fishing in Richards Bay

Henry from Fish Zone had all to proof when he went on his latest fishing
trip on Monday 08/11/10. Fishing was awesome! On his new ultra light set-up
of 1.8kg only! Landed a Long tail brown, Honey comb ray, big Stumpnose,
Bartail Flathead, and some little odds like Thorn fishes, the odd Toby and
even a seagull which got tangled up in the main fishing line. He was safely
released after snapping at his rescuer a couple of times.

Great fishing indeed! Around Richards Bay there was reports of Dorado, tuna,
wahoo, kingfish, Striped Marlin, Blue Marlin, Short bill spearfish and

The Garrick are back from their 5 day holiday.
On Tuesday 27 July some nice size Garrick's came out,
Shads were full up and the Garrick's where hungry on the south peer.
Quinten member of Fihszone landed his first 2 beauties between 10.00 and
13.00.Left one 8KG and right on 8.96KG. Jaco van de walt that took
Quinten for his first one also landed a nice size one of about
13.8KG just as the sun came out. Jaco lost one big fish of +-100kg when a
knot in the line broke while the fish was heading straight for the deep.
Everybody's curiosity is still on about the unknown big fish.

Two Javilin grunters at R/Bay on Saturday

Catch report for Sat.

I launched late at 07h00 and went straight to caravan park reef , with my first down I picked up the smaller mof grunter, the bait was pushed up the line and I just pulled it down and caught the second fish with my second down and with the same bait. After that it went quite. I caught both fish before 07h45. It looks as if they were there very early and I just got the end of the run. I used squid only and there were no sharks. It looks as if the moff Grunters might be back, I moved a number of times but did not even get a bite afterwards, and stopped fishing at 09h00.

Couta of the pier

Yet another giant couta was landed of Richards Bay North Pier yesterday. The
lucky fisherman, Mr. Poobal Rungan sais both his fishing partners lost a
couta each before he managed to land his 22kg beauty. Fish around the harbor
mouth area is full-up once again.

Dual Force Drag System

The specialized carbon DFD or Dual Force Drag system used on all Makaira reels was specifically engineered to be mounted in the right side of the spool in order to bring all the mechanical workings closer together to maximize alignment and durability. The farther mechanical parts are separated the more opportunity there is for tolerance error and flexing which causes parts alignment issues. The DFD principal was specifically designed around the “Pull Bar Drag System”. The major advantage to a “Pull Bar Drag System” is that the drag is being pulled rather than pushed. The most common type of lever drag in the industry is the “Push Bar Drag System”. The Push Bar System places heavy pressure on the left side plate and utilizes the frame for overall stability which is a fatal flaw in this type of design. This pressure creates frame flex, reducing drag pressure and causing tolerance alignment issues. This problem is further exaggerated on open top designs from other companies. One of the major benefits to the pull bar design is that there is no pressure placed on the frame. Therefore, our open top frame designs will not suffer frame flex found in our competitors reels.

This highly efficient drag system was designed and engineered by Tiburon Engineering USA to increase maximum drag pressure, reduce side load pressure on ball bearings and improve heat dissipation for long term smoothness over extended periods. This Okuma DFD is considered a wet drag system comprised of two carbon fiber drag washers that are sandwiched together and bonded with a fiber glass core. Pure carbon washers are coated with a thin layer of Cal Sheet’s Universal drag grease for virtually zero start up inertia. These washers are compressed by two precision ground 17-4 grade stainless steel drag plates that have been ground flat then polished for maximum smoothness. These stainless steel friction drag plates have a minimum 32 Rockwell hardness allowing for high-end drag settings and consistently smooth drag performance at all ranges. The drag system is secured to the right side of the spool by a 6061-T6 grade aluminum cover that features Type-II anodizing for maximum alignment, strength and corrosion resistance.

Silent anti-reverse

The Makaira's proprietary anti-reverse system allows for a smoother and quieter feeling. We equate this feeling to that of a Lexus, when compared to other reels in the market. Most reels in the market hide their rough gear quality by the noise and vibration caused by the engagement and clacking of the anti-reverse pawls. The Okuma silent system is unlike any other 2-speed reel in the industry for smoothness. This anti-reverse system is supported by a 12 point double dog anti-reverse pawl system. The Makaira system is very simple in principal but the performance is extremely advanced. As you turn the reel forward the anti-reverse pawls slide open allowing a friction free and quiet retrieve. As soon as the handle is stopped or pulled backwards the anti-reverse pawls are engaged into place by their drive shaft actuated sliding system. The strength of this anti-reverse system does not solely rely on a dog spring like found on most of our competitors reels. The sliding function does not rely heavily on a dog spring system and is mainly controlled by the forward and reverse movement applied to the drive shaft through the movement of the angler turning the handle.

Helical Cut Gearing

Makaira lever drag reels utilize helical cut main and pinion gears. This process allows for improved gear meshing which equates to improved gear smoothness. The angled teeth found in helical cut gears engage more gradually than straight cut or spur gear teeth. This allows helical gears to run smoother and quieter compared to spur gears. Spur gears cause impact stress and noise, because of the hard meshing and can not take as much torque as helical gears because their teeth are receiving impact blows as they mesh together.

Grease and oil

To further enhance the corrosion resistance of Makaira reels, Okuma applies our CRC or Corrosion Resistant Coating process to all internal and external parts for maximum protection. Our CRC process utilizes a coating process of Corrosion X HD formula that actually penetrates and bonds to the aluminum parts for long term protection. The extra steps taken in the assembly of the Makaira allows this reel to be a leader in the fishing tackle industry for long term use and performance. To further enhance the Makaira's function and performance, Okuma applies Cal's Universal drag grease to our carbon fiber drag washers for the smoothest wet drag system. The addition of Cal's drag grease allows for virtually zero start up inertia and smooth performance at all settings. Cal's Universal grease is also used for coating moving parts such as the main and pinion gears for improved performance.

The City Of uMhlathuze is proud to have our very own Jigmaster of note. Dawie Erasmus got hooked on this extreme way of fishing since his very first drop of a metal jig. His rig of a ATC VS-Max and Okuma Salina 65 spooled with YGK Jigman Braid has landed him many trophy fish.

Some of these catches include the once uncommon Amberjack and its cousin the tropical Yellowtail. These fish are known for Hard fighting abilities and is the target specie of most Jigman. They are also known to be great eating fish. Other than Amberjack they also catch some Kingfishes, like the Giant Travely, Bluefin, Blacktip, yellowspot and many more. It is not uncommon to land the odd bottom specie on these jigging outings. Some Slingers, Englishman, Kob, Goatfish, and Rockcods are amongst those species. Not to mention one of Dawie's greatest catches (and release) up to date, the Brindle of +/- 200lb caught here in Richards Bay 2009.

Top 10 Marlin Lures!

Nothing makes an offshore angler's blood boil more than a disparaging comment attacking the lures he's pulling. I got set up like a bowling pin during the Miami International Boat Show this past year when I joined a table full of lure manufactures at the Clevelander bar. Capt. Jeremiah Nachtigal asked me what my favorite lures were while sitting across from the famous Hawaiian lure makers Bomboy Llanes and Marlin Parker. The Jack Daniels told me that the best course of action would be to piss the whole table off, so I blurted out, "They're all the same, and I could whip anybody's butt with four black Wide Ranges."

The ensuing silence seemed to last for an hour, but I'm sure it was only seconds before Nachtigal waded in and saved my sorry butt with the quip, "He's been hanging around Peter Wright too much, eh, fellas?" The resulting laughter told me I was forgiven for my East Coast ignorance, and the night proceeded without a pummeling.

After a few discussions that night, I decided to do another top 10 lure article. Instead of asking just the top captains, we turned to the general population of offshore anglers and asked them their favorites. We posted the question on our website, in our newsletter and through several e-mail blasts, encouraging anglers to pass it on and reply. And while a lot of the same pro captains I talked to on the first weighed in for this list, the large majority of responses for this one came from regular fellows pulling lures in their home waters.

Several fishing websites got news of the list, and the forums were pretty entertaining for me to read as the list took shape. One of the fellows immediately posted three lures he didn't want to see on the list, starting with the big overall winner, the Mold Craft Wide Range. Perfect. I love to get you boys talking.

Like I said before, no accounting firms tabulated these results, and they aren't listed in any particular order, although I do have to say that the Wide Range pretty much shows up in nearly everyone's spread — and it ain't because it's the prettiest on the block either!

1. Mold Craft Wide Range
One of the original Mold Craft lures, the Wide Range (pictured above) came to Frank Johnson through the suggestions of Capt. Peter Wright in 1977. Wright and Hawaiian Capt. Jeff Fay were experimenting with lures made out of rolls of sheet rubber while working together on the Humdinger in the mid-'70s. Wright showed his prototypes to Johnson during a charter, and they struck a deal on the spot to make the lures.

The lure gets its name from the "wide range" of speeds and conditions through which the lure can be pulled. "It's definitely the lure of choice for rough water," says Johnson. "With its squared-off nose and center hole, the Wide Range stays stable in almost any conditions."

This lure showed up in a vast majority of the responses, and all the big names seem to pull at least one Wide Range in the spread. On almost every boat I board, no matter where I am in the world, I'll usually find a Mold Craft Wide Range. One of my favorite testimonials came from a Richard McAdams, who fishes the Gulf of Mexico: "If I could pick only one marlin lure to fish with anywhere in the world, it would be a purple/silver/black Mold Craft Senior Wide Range. This lure gets the most vicious strikes I have ever seen. I can put it on the flat line or short 'rigger, and it runs like a champ in all seas. I fish the northern Gulf of Mexico where the seas can jump from 3 feet to 6 feet in a matter of minutes, but this lure catches fish no matter how rough it gets. It runs well with either a single- or double-hook rig and is pretty much idiot-proof … which makes it the perfect lure for me!"

2. Mold Craft Super Chugger
Traveling angler and freelance writer Tony Pena, whose work you often see here in Marlin, can't say enough about the Mold Craft Super Chugger — and he has plenty of company. "My vote goes to the Mold Craft Super Chugger (8 1/4 inches in blue/white/yellow combo). I've caught blue, black and striped marlin, Pacific sailfish and numerous other species, such as 300-pound yellowfin tuna, on this lure. It works bigger than its size and is truly a universal lure, producing great results from Thailand to Panama."

The concave face of the Super Chugger allows the lure to come and grab a gulp of air and let it out in a thick bubble stream with a short side-to-side wiggle of its head. It rises and falls with a surprising regularity that seems to drive blue marlin crazy. The lure's face causes it to pull hard through the water, but it still remains stable in rough water. "It works well at a wide range of speeds as well," says Frank Johnson Jr. "You can pull anywhere from 5 to 12 knots, but it works best at the lower end of that range."

Paulo Amorim's 1,402-pound, all-tackle Atlantic blue marlin ate a pink-and-white Super Chugger off Vitoria, Brazil, in 1992, sealing the lure's status in big-game-fishing history.

3. Pakula Lumo Sprocket
While fishing in the USVI Open/Atlantic Blue Marlin Tournament on the Poli-Sea, I saw first mate Jody Wentworth jump overboard to retrieve a lure that had just caught a 500-pound blue and fallen into the water. As usual, there were big sharks in the area attracted to the struggles of the marlin, but Wentworth, determined not to lose his last Pakula with two days of fishing left in the tournament, swam down around 20 feet to retrieve the sinking lure.

"Peter Pakula's cup-nosed creations are relatively unknown in California, but they have been a well-kept secret of many crews for the past 15 years," says Greg Stotesbury of AFTCO. "I have several vintage Pakulas aboard the Kawakawa that look like they were trolled over asphalt from all the bill and teeth marks in the resin heads!"

Peter Pakula started making his lures in his native Australia in 1976, but his first lures went to Hawaii, and he didn't start to sell them in Australia until 1980. Designed as a straight runner with very tight swimming action, the Lumo Sprocket works well in any position but runs best in the long outrigger slot.

4. Tournament Tackle's Ilander Lure or Hawaiian Eye
The legendary Ilander, or "Hawaiian Eye" as some of you still know it, has probably caught twice as many blue marlin on the Atlantic Coast as its nearest competitor. The Ilander is another one of those lures that you're apt to find on board in even the most remote fishing holes on earth.

Developed by Jim Kress in 1976, the lure was initially named the Hawaiian Eye and was designed to troll at high speeds on the way out to the fishing grounds. The Ilander accounted for several innovations that can be found on many lures today: It was the first true high-speed trolling lure, the first to have permanent nylon skirts and the first to use realistic eyes.

Versatility (along with tremendous productivity) probably accounts for most of the Ilander's success. Anglers like John Lavelle of Cape May, New Jersey, reach for the Ilander no matter what species of marlin they're chasing. "I know you're going to hear from a lot of captains on the East Coast who never leave the dock without a trusty supply of blue/white Ilanders with some meat behind them," says Lavelle. "Besides a naked ballyhoo, the blue/white islanders are the bait of choice for white marlin on the East Coast."

The lure is so popular on the East Coast that its use played a large part in the recent retraction of the National Marine Fisheries Service's call for the use of all circle hooks in billfish tournaments when using live or dead bait. The huge number of dead-bait trollers didn't want to put circle hooks in front of the beloved Ilanders.

5. Copa Fishing Lures' Tado
Not only did Steve Coggin's Tado get a lot of votes, but the pleas for recognition usually came with a picture of a huge blue marlin with a Tado hanging out of its face! (It was also the only lure that got a vote from the maker's wife — but don't worry, fellas, I didn't count it!)

I first became aware of Coggin's lures while interviewing him for a story written by Jim Rizzuto called "Jewels in the Spread" (June/July 2003) for some filler material. His beautiful, big lures looked more like works of art than something you'd fish. He makes all of his lures by hand and still uses real shell inserts.

"Tado is a big lure, and it runs great on the short corner," says Coggin. "I first started making it during the late '70s and early '80s at a time when most guys were making smaller lures. I gave one to Chip Vanmols on the Jen Ken Po, and he caught a 700-pounder on it. He promptly named the lure Tado, which is short for the Hawaiian name (Kona slang actually) for skipjack over 10 pounds, 'otado.'"

The big Tado bait secured its reputation in Kona by catching a 1,197-pound blue during the 1993 Lahaina Jackpot for the boys on the Cormorant, which held the spot for the largest tournament fish ever caught for several years running.

6. Joe Yee Super Plunger
Although Bart Miller and Gene Vander Hoek are widely credited with coming up with the first plunger, they weren't the ones to bring popularity to the shape. "Joe Yee's Super Plunger is probably the most famous and widely used plunger," says Tracy Melton of Melton International Tackle. "We've been selling them since 1994, and in my opinion, there's only one super plunger, and it's handmade by Joe Yee. I think he's got 12 or 13 granders on that lure, including the current 50-pound record Pacific blue marlin weighing 1,166-pounds caught off Kona."

But the Joe Yee Super Plunger also performs well in the Atlantic. "It's a great big fish lure, and a lot of guys pull them in Bermuda. Some Bermudian fellow came over to Kona and caught a grander on one and took a boatload back home with him. The Pink Pearl Super Plunger is the one everybody wants," says Melton.

Joe Yee still makes every Super Plunger in his basement in Kona. "Capt. Peter Hoogs on the Pamela asked me to make a plunger for him," says Yee. "Capt. Gene Vander Hoek was making them and doing real good. But I didn't know what a plunger was. So I made up a big lure for Hoogs, and he went out and caught a 500-pounder on it. And since Gene's was a 12-inch lure, and mine was more like 14, Hoogs called it a Super Plunger, and the name stuck.

"A lot of people have caught big fish on that lure," Yee continues. "One day I was eating dinner with a group that was going charter fishing the next day, and I ended up telling the lady that she was going to catch a grander — just kidding, you know? I went to my room and brought her back a Super Plunger and told her to catch a big one. The next day, I was having lunch near the docks and heard that the Jen Ken Po had a big one on. Sure enough, it was that same lady, and she ended up catching a 1,183-pound blue."

7. Marlin Magic Ruckus
Another overwhelming favorite, the Marlin Magic Ruckus, worked its way into the spread of a large number of big-fish captains, falling just behind the Wide Range in overall popularity. Capt. Marlin Parker has been making lures for more than 20 years, and the Marlin Magic Ruckus was one of his first designs.

"I came up with Ruckus after chopping down a much larger head and shaving down the nose," says Parker. "The resulting shape carries a lot of air down on the dive, and it looks like a white explosion as it releases the air underwater. That's why we named it Ruckus.

"The Ruckus has a softer slant, so its one of the easier of my lures to rig and run," he continues. "It's highly productive and one of my best tournament lures. I've won more tournaments on the ruckus than any other lure, including the Bisbee Black and Blue in 2004 and the World Cup in 2002. The lure goes off in any position, and if you match the hatch, you should do well. If there's a lot of skipjack around, pull a purple/black; if there are more mackerel, pull one with some green and blue. Last year we even had a run where the pure black was just incredible."

8. Black Bart 1656
This one really surprised me. I was pretty sure at least one of Bart Miller's lures would make the list; however, I just figured it would be one of his ever-popular styles like the Breakfast or Grander Candy. Instead, the smaller-size 1656 Angle pulled ahead of its big brothers in the voting.

"That's the shape I used to catch the 1,656-pound blue marlin, only it was a much bigger head than the one we sell now," says Miller. "I sized it down a bit because most people don't pull 130-pound line. With the smaller head, you can use 50 or 80 and pull it fine."

Miller attributes the lure's success to its versatility. "It really takes a variety of good lure features and wraps them into one shape. It has an easy entry that allows it to run well in all conditions, it doesn't have a radical slant so it stays in the water, and its 12-inch size elicits a lot of strikes from different species," he says. "A slight reverse taper gives the lure a nice wiggle but doesn't make the lure change its course, so it has a really high hookup ratio. I make a whole line of them ranging in size from a 9-inch up to the Braziliano, which is actually closer to the size of the one that caught the 1,656. We also make the 1656 with a flat nose. I've gotten a lot of mileage out of that shape."

9. Bob Schneider's Yap
Bob Schneider of Lake Park, Florida, used his stint in the U.S. Navy as a way to test and design lure shapes way back in the late '50s. He started by raiding the ship's chandlery for pieces of wood that he could whittle down to lure heads.

"I'd fish the lures with a hand line off the fantail of the destroyer, and when one started catching fish, I'd name it for whatever island group we were closest to. That's how the Yap got its name. It's named for the Yap Islands near the Mariana Trench," says Schneider.

Schneider got a copyright on his Yaps, making them one of the first offshore lures to be patented. With its blunt nose and slightly off-center hole, the meandering and quivering Yap still holds the Florida state record with a 981-pound blue caught off Destin by Warren Culverson on the Dixie Darling.
Capt. Allen Sizle, who now resides in Birmingham, Alabama, was one of many who recounted great early success with Schneider's Yap. "One day during the early '80s, when everybody else was pulling bait in the Bahamas, we decided to try pulling some lures while fishing out off Chub Cay. For three days, we screamed around pulling lures and caught 10 blues, two sails and three whites almost all on the same lure: Bob Schneider's Yap. The first time we ever pulled it, we missed three blue marlin because we didn't know what we were doing. On one of those three days, the Yap caught a 535-pound blue, two whites and a sail."

10. Any small jet or bullet on the shotgun
A large majority of anglers like to pull a jet or bullet-shaped lure on the shotgun. Almost everyone who makes a jet was represented in the sampling, with no one manufacturer coming out a clear winner … which pretty much sums up Capt. Peter B. Wright's third favorite choice: "Any brand of conical, symmetrical, metal jet head has caught more 1,000-pound-plus blue marlin than any other lure." And here's my theory on why: Because everybody in Hawaii is pulling one on the shotgun trying to catch a tuna! When the majority of crews are pulling the same style lure, in mostly the same position, in one of the premier big blue marlin destinations, it's going to get eaten a lot.

And since the fish doesn't have to pluck the lure off the water's surface and can catch it with relative ease, the hookup percentage of the heavy lure is going to be pretty darn good. While you hear a lot of claims about jets whistling like wounded squid or creating bubbles through the jet holes, I think a jet or bullet-headed lure's main advantage lies in its relatively small size and lack of a side-to-side motion. Bart Miller insists that his Black Bart Pro Jet is the best jet ever and the only one of his lures that never comes out of the spread … and I'm not going to argue with him.

Although there are probably dozens more lures that deserve mention, a few that almost made the cut for this story include: the Makaira Brutus, pulled by quite a few boys in Louisiana; the Bomboy Magilla, a huge Hawaiian lure made by Bomboy Llanes; and the Joe Yee Apollo. Currently leading the Fish Zone Biggest Shad compo is Mr.Chris Naidoo with a 3,46kg beauty caught from South Pier Richards Bay. Compo ends December 31/09.

20,4kg King

Mr. Eric du Preez caught this here 20,4kg King from the surf yesterday (13/12/09). The bait used was a shad head. The last big King in the Bay was also caught on a head so I guess it is fair to say that this year the Kingies is "heading" our way.

Dropshot Compo

This Saturday, 12/12/09, there will be yet another Great Dropshot competition at Pelican Island. With prizes worth over R10 000 it looks to be bigger and better than the one held back in February. Please come and join us dropshotting this event. All funds made will go towards Pathways Zululand for children with Autism. Entry fees is only R50-00 p/person. Compo start at 12h00 and end at 16h00.

Prize giving will take place from 17h00 from Fish Zone where there will be wors-rolls for sale and some free drinks.
